Elina Svitolina to compete in the first virtual tennis tournament casting 32 pro athletes

The Masters 1000 in Madrid, suspended due to the pandemic of new coronavirus, is being replaced by a video game tournament that will distribute €200,000 to help weakened players and fight against the disease, the organizers announced earlier this month. The creation of the Mutua Madrid Open Virtua Pro, an innovative tournament that will reproduce the tennis competition in a virtual way, allow the best players in the world to compete from home.

This virtual tournament will last from 27 to 30 April and aims to “help tennis players in need at the moment, those who do not have the income to face all these months of inactivity, and those who are suffering from Covid-19,” the press release said. As a contribution, the tournament will make “a donation of 150,000 euros on both tables (ATP and WTA), and the winners will then decide which share to give to the tennis players and tenniswomen with the most economic problems ». In addition to this sum, “50,000 euros will also be destined to reduce the social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic”, the organizers informed.

Elina Svitolina has been training for it since her participation has been announced by the organizers. She will compete in the Group 2 alongside Johanna Konta, Victoria Azarenka and Sorana Cirstea.
